0 How To Make A Classic Mixtape 101: w/ Drake (Video)

Drake spoke MTV's Sway on how he approaches Mixtapes vs. Ablums and along the way, he drops some some knowledge on what it takes to make a classic mixtape. Rappers takes notes!!

"I think that when creating a mixtape, you have to approach it with a selfless mind-set," Drake told us. "A mixtape can't be the songs that don't make your album, or songs that aren't good enough to make your album make your mixtape — unless you're that good...Before, I remember people used to be in the studio cutting songs, and they would be like, 'Oh, that song is OK. I'll just put it on my mixtape,' " he added. "Now a mixtape is an actual tool. It's a format you need. You don't necessarily need it, but it can be useful. Like with Fab and the other guys, I know they do a lot of rapping on other guys' beats. It's hard to tour like that, as incredible as it may be. Now Wayne, when the No Ceilings set comes on, it's ridiculous. It's hard to rap over other people's songs and have it be timeless. With So Far Gone, when I did flip other people's songs, half the time people didn't know what song it was. I tried to pick stuff that was new or rare or just like an album cut. But yeah, man, if I use somebody else's beat, I try to make a song out of it." -

0 Wiz Khalifa Speaks On The Success of “Kush & Orange Juice”, Record Labels, Your Girlfriend & More w/ Complex

Khalifa Man sat down with Complex to talk about The Success of “Kush & Orange Juice", his songwriting process, smoking weed with his mom (lol I know right?) and more. Here is a bit of what he had to say:

Complex: Good tip. For the people who don’t know, you’ve been in the game for a long time. What’s your writing process like and how has it changed over the years?

Wiz Khalifa: Really before I was on Prince of The City Vol. 1, and for a while after that, I would just hear a beat and go just write to it and just try to figure out a hook. I would write and just spit as hard as I could, which was cool for back then ’cause it really let people know that I was a good lyricist. Then after a while around like Star Power and Prince of the City Vol. 2, I started to really play with more melodies and singing and just trying to use different things, different swag. Just trying not to say stuff as hard, but be more about how I say it and then I kinda mixed those two [styles] together.

Now when I go in the studio I’ll hear a beat and really, I let the beat tell me whatever I want to talk about. I never really write my hooks, I just do those off the head like mixing melodies up. The singing style, that sort of developed itself cause at first I was kind of shy to sing because I didn’t think it was that tight. But people telling me that it was getting better and better. I kind of just stuck with the singing thing and now I’m at the point where I don’t write on paper anymore. I’ll just go in and I’ll lay like four bars and I’ll think about another four bars and come back and lay that, then put the hook together around that.

Complex: Do you think that there was a point where you thought, “Alright maybe this won’t work out. Maybe I should go to school and do some other stuff”?

Wiz Khalifa: I never felt like the music wasn’t gonna work ’cause I always worked hard at it and it always panned out for me. Every year it got better and better and even when I graduated high school my dad wanted me to go to college so he was like, “You got certain goals, but if you don’t get there by this time then you have to go to school, but if you do, then you’re straight.” So I kind of passed that [school] up way before he even expected.

Complex: First instinct is always the best. Switching gears, how long have your parents known you smoked? And what was their reaction?

Wiz Khalifa: [Laughs.] My mom…

Arthur Pitt [Wiz's PR/Marketing guru] interupts: You better be careful with mentioning your mom, I just got in trouble the other day. [Laughs.]

Wiz Khalifa: [Laughs.] Nah, nah, nah, she’s cool, she aight, she like that shit. [Laughs.] My mom knew I was smoking when I was 15. No, actually she knew the first time I smoked when I was in 6th grade, so around 13. I got in trouble for it and I thought weed was bad for a minute, but then I started smoking everyday! [Laughs.] So when I was like 15 she found out. She wasn’t mad about it. She was just like, “If you gonna be smokin’ give me some, nigga!” [Laughs.]

0 J .Cole Blogs About Life, Debut Album & More

In the latest edition of Karen Civil's "In My Own Words" segment, Fayetteville's own J .Cole, hops behind the keyboard to give fans an update on his life, his debut album and more. Here's a bit of what he had to say:

"Karen finally caught up with a nigga. I was supposed to write this three months ago, but I’ve been so busy. Let me give you an example of how my day has been:

-I had to go to the studio on Thursday, so I got there around 5
-I get home around 5 in the morning
-Then I had to catch a 9 a.m. flight only to have a show in Georgia at 11 p.m. which ended at 1:30.
-So I drive back to Atlanta. Get to the A at 3:30 to catch at 6 a.m. flight to Upstate N.Y.
-I then ride to Long Island and do a show there.

That’s the type of schedule it is right now. The type of chaos I’m pretty much going through, which, please don’t mistake me, I’m forever grateful for all of it. But it is somewhat overwhelming when you go from a nigga that was doing beats in his bedroom, to try and write songs and you kind of looking for things to do. It’s hectic but its all for the best and all of this work is going to lead to something that will pay off in the end.

I’m working on the album. Oh my god! I’m like getting more excited about the album everyday that goes by, every week that passes by. People around me and my team feel I have a classic on my hands. They always want to tell me like, “Yo you good, you don’t really need anything else.” Honestly, I don’t feel like. I feel that I can drop another song that was crazier than all the other shit that was on the album. So, the album keeps getting better and better mainly due to the fact I’m not satisfied because I know all the people that are coming out this year. This is an incredible year for music. There will be a bunch of big albums in 2010. I just have to put my best foot forward basically because if not, these dudes are going to try and crush me. Like, for example, I just keep thinking Kanye is coming with some shit. I already know he is gonna kill the game, so I just want to come out and make a splash. A big splash".

0 Rap Legend Guru Passes Away After Losing Battle With Cancer

Via Baller Status:

After a nearly two-month hospitalization, legendary rapper Guru (best known as the frontman for Gangstarr) died Monday morning (April 19), after a long battle with cancer, reports DJPremierBlog.com.

He was just 43 years old.

Solar, Guru's business partner and sidekick in recent years, told the Yo!Raps (who's PR company had been coordinating press for Guru since his hospitalization) that the 43-year-old rapper had been suffering from a "malicious illness for over a year and after numerous special treatments under the supervision of medical specialists failed".

He had tried to keep the cancer diagnosis private, but in early March, news leaked that Guru had been admitted to the hospital, suffered a heart attack, and was recovering from a mystery illness. Previous reports said he suffered from Anoxia, effects from a lengthy history of asthma and lung problems, but these new findings reveal a much worst condition.

"The world has lost one of the best MCs and hip-hop icons of all-time -- my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru," Solar said in a statement. "Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius.

"For the fans that reached out with love and support, I can't tell you how much that meant to Guru and myself. Guru prepared this letter (read below) while he was in the hospital for the fans," the producer continued. "I hope now that Guru has moved on to a better place."...

Guru (real name: Keith Elam) rose to fame in the 80s as the frontman to the legendary rap duo, Gangstarr, also consisting of DJ Premier. The group released the classic single, "Words I Manifest," which was followed by their critically acclaimed debut, No More Mr. Nice Guy, in 1989. The group went on to release six official albums through 2003, before they split and went their separate ways.

#RIP Guru

0 Big Sean Speaks On Debut Album, Detroit, Working With Kanye & Pharrell, Label Politics & More w/ Complex Magazine

G.O.O.D Music's own Big Sean, recently sat down with Complex Magazine to discuss growing up in Detroit, his debut album: "Finally Famous", dealing with the politics of the game, Meeting Pharrell & Kanye West, that infamous incident in Chicago & More

Complex: On the UKNOWBIGSEAN mixtape, Pharrell talked about how you were pretty timid in the studio before you guys got acquainted, but impressed him with your presence on the track. Are people pleasantly surprised when they meet you?

Big Sean: I’m really the most humble, nice person. [Laughs.] My grandma always told me, “Boy, you better act right, because just as fast as you get something, you can lose it twice as fast.” Plus, nobody likes a fucking asshole. That’s the worst shit ever. The boastfulness on my raps is just confidence, it’s not necessarily asshole-ish, I’m not trying to be…well, I feel like you should be confident in whatever you do, and a lot of my new music [that’s coming out] I want people to judge more so than the music I’ve put out recently, because I feel like it’s really changed a lot. I just always stay honest with myself. All my stuff isn’t boastful, but some of it is. But that’s just the music, the art. When Kobe go on the court, he’ll talk all the shit he want, but when he’s in person, he may be a nice guy, you know?

Complex: Were you a fan of P’s production before you got in the studio with him?

Big Sean: Oh hell yeah! The thing was, I met Pharrell when we were in Japan. Kanye took me to Japan with him right when I signed to Def Jam for the Bathing Ape World Tour that they do over there, so it was N*E*R*D, Kanye, Teriyaki Boyz, Nigo, those guys. I absolutely love BAPE and BBC, so I was excited. I never met Pharrell, Nigo, or none of those guys. So I remember the first time I met them, and I was nervous. P didn’t know who I was at all, but he was like, “What’s up, what’s good,” and the next day after the first show, there was a BAPE photo shoot for their lookbook. Kanye was talking to Nigo and was like “Man, you should let my new artist Big Sean take some pictures.” Nigo heard some of my music because Kanye started playing some of my music, and he was like, “Yeah, I fuck with it. Let’s do it,” so I was in the BAPE lookbook. Pharrell was there too, and Pharrell was talking to Kanye like “Man, who is that kid, what’s up with him?” [Laughs.] Kanye was like, “Aww, nigga, he a BEAST!” He was like, “Aight, Nigo, Teriyaki Boyz, come here. Everybody come in the huddle!” I was like, “What the fuck is he doing?” He’s like, “Spit that shit! Don’t spit no wack shit!” [Laughs.] So I spit my heart out. Pharrell was really into it, and then he started listening to the music because we were playing it there, and he was like, “Man, I wanna work with you on your album! Let me get down with you.” I used to ride to school listening to these guys, so it’s a dream come true.

Complex: That’s a lot of love right there. Switching topics a bit, I’ve noticed that in the past there’s been a bunch of delays regarding your stuff, from videos to mixtapes…

Big Sean: Oh yeah, the “Getcha Some” video took like a year and a half to come out, and when it came out I was pissed off because I don’t even like the song anymore. I’ve grown as an artist so much that I’m like, “I don’t even wanna see this shit.” My style has changed more, my clothes, but I understand that it’s all politics. Def Jam is a great label and I’ve just learned certain things you gotta do to get all your shit in order. It’s nobody’s fault, it’s just the way it happens. That’s what it is with that. You live and you learn, man. I’ve learned you can’t wait on anybody. You have to raise your awareness yourself, because then they’re gonna jump on anyway. Whoever, your label, your people, they’re gonna recognize the difference from when they go to your show and everybody’s just staring at you, and they go to your show and motherfuckers is saying the words and getting hype for you. They see that, and I’ve been working harder than anybody. It’s just perfect timing man, with the XXL cover thing, people over at Complex showing me love, all these magazines, MTV and BET, I can’t even tell when I’m sleep no more. [Laughs.]

0 Preview of Drake x XXL Magazine Cover Story

Here is a brief excerpt of Drakes Cover Story with XXL Magazine, alongside Nicki Minaj. On newsstands May 20, 2010.

XXL: What are your thoughts on this cover?

Drake: It’s great to me. I’ve never done XXL, so it’s exciting. And to be doing it with Nicki, man, that’s my dog. That’s more than my dog. That’s, like, we have the most interesting relationship, ’cause it’s so multilayered. That’s my co-worker, my peer, my family. But, at the same time, on any given day, she’s, like, the love of my life… Nicki’s a very intriguing character. To be doing it with her is great, man.

XXL: So since the success of your mixtape So Far Gone you’ve become rap’s golden child. Has it been hard getting your debut together, to live up to that hype?

Drake: Not hard. If you’re not struggling, then there’s something wrong. If it was effortless, then I’d be scared. If I was like, “Yeah, this is it, this is the one.” I’m still listening to it, and I’m like, “Man, I don’t know, it could be better.” But that’s just me. That’s just the artist in myself competing with myself. And now it’s so crazy, because, to be in the industry, a lot of people start playing you their music. You start hearing other people’s hits and sound, and you start thinking, Wow, okay, this is all the music that’s coming out this year. And you start thinking about yourself fitting into that, you know? Like, last year, other than Blueprint 3, it was a pretty dry year for hip-hop, as far as, like, the legends. But this year it’s way different. You know, you’ve got OutKast rumored to be coming out.

XXL: Do you know something we don’t?

Drake: I don’t. I just read what I read. Even from, like, [Santogold] is coming out again, MGMT. You’ve got Jeezy. You’ve got T.I. Carter IV’s gonna drop as soon as Wayne gets out. So it’s a great year for music. But when you’re in it, you also start thinking about, Well, I can’t get lost in that. And I make R&B, and hip-hop, so I’m not only thinking about the rappers—I’m thinking about the Dreams, the MGMTs, just great music on a whole. That’s the best part about it, because that’s what makes my music better and pushes me to keep working on it, as opposed to just being, like, “Okay, it’s done.” I wasn’t confident when I dropped So Far Gone, neither. I thought I had made the biggest mistake of my life.
