0 Complex Blogs Top 10 Most Underrated New Rappers

Hard to believe it’s still possible in this age of low-budge videos and WSHH
fuckery, but there’s actually such a thing as an underexposed rapper. The
problem is no longer about getting your shit out there, it’s about getting your
shit heard when there’s millions of other shit dropping daily. Too many choices,
not enough time. Inevitably, some good MCs fall through the cracks—like our boy
Wiz Khalifa, whose new album, Deal or No Deal, is out today (buy it now). The
Pittsburgh rapper’s been around for a minute, but doesn’t get nearly as much
buzz as many inferior peers.

Well, we at Complex are here to change all that. In honor of Wiz and other unheralded artists, we’ve put together a list of the 10 most underrated newrappers—and by “new,” we mean “relatively new.” Dudes like Curren$y and Peedi Crakk are definitely overlooked, but they’ve already had a moment in thespotlight. We looked specifically for MCs who’ve consistently flown under the radar. Read on to sample 10 rappers you need to know now…

0 Wiz Khalifa x DJBooth.net Interview

In an exclusive interview with DJBooth.net, Wiz Khalifa steps into the Booth to discuss why he doesn’t consider his time with Warner Bros. to be wasted, the New Year’s resolution that will make Steve Jobs very unhappy, and the perils of enjoying some “Studio Lovin’” when you’re 6’4”. "Deal or No Deal" drops 11/24.

Quotable:

DJ Booth: Another song I want to talk about is number 14. It’s entitled “Who I Am.” Without having heard the full-length version of this record, set the record straight for everybody at this very moment: who are you, who is Wiz Khalifa?

Wiz Khalifa: I would definitely answer, just good times, man – fun, no stress, great music, a lot of weed smoke, and doin’ whatever the f*ck you feel. That’s what I do. And bein’ a business, too. ‘Cause I’m all about conducting business and doin’ sh*t the right way.

0 50 Cent Talks BISD, The New Generation of Rappers, & More With Vibe Magazine

Vibe: A lot of labels were built around one figure or a core group of artists. G-Unit was around you, Cash Money around Hot Boys, No Limit around Master P. Do you feel there's an expiration date on labels built around one act?

50 Cent: I don't believe that. You call it an "expiration date," I'll call it a change. Things absolutely have to change. Nothing stays the same. If you don't get wiser, you just get older and more foolish. Look at Lil Wayne. His success is the reflection of a dad's love for his son. When you make it to album six and there's still marketing dollars around for you, it's because your dad loves his son. Before that point, they would have done been rid of him. Album six and you still ain't turned over no big profits? You're done. The business would have disposed of him before he made it to album six. Don't think this shit is organic. This is business. Sure, your body of work is there and you can get busy, but you mean to tell me that nobody gives a fuck for six albums? It's marketing dollars, and the company decided he was the best possible thing to go after. But you gotta stick around longer, you gotta survive that.

Vibe: But you can't discount mixtape buzz--

50 Cent: M.O.P. has mixtape buzz, but that doesn't mean they're ever going to sell records.

Vibe: But I mean buzz like you had, Wayne had.
50 Cent: That's not the same thing when you're on album six. Until you get the first available opportunity to be marketed, and you record goes "kaboom," and you sell 12 million fucking records because your shit was right--there's a very big difference from being on album six and having mixtapes. Wayne, he has more efforts than I have. He ain't no new artist. You can't look at him like a new guy. Even the Drake kid. That is marketing. The company is getting your record played. You're saying "I did all of this without a record deal," but the record company was marketing your fucking record.

Vibe: What do you think of the new generation of rappers, like Drake or Kid Cudi?

50 Cent: I think they've always been here. They were Q-Tip, they were Common Sense, Mos Def, Talib [Kweli]. They were smarter--these new guys are just hipsters. They got a coolness to them and a look. But back then, Common and them were saying something that was socially responsible. It was just smarter. I listened to them. I'm a fan. The perspective that I was actually seeing things from and was subjected to because of my living conditions made me a bigger fan of KRS-One Criminal Minded, [The Notorious B.I.G.'s] Ready to Die, those other things that had the aggression necessary to get by in my environment. It led me in that direction as an artist.

0 Soulja Boy Speaks On Producing For Kanye West & Rihanna

Via MTV:

Soulja Boy Tell'em has jumped from behind the knobs into the forefront as a performer — he just released three mixtapes on Halloween: Cortez, Paranormal Activity and DatPiff. But don't forget, the young G still knows how to make beats. One of Soulja's biggest fans, Kanye West, recently had the Southern millionaire in the lab working for him.

"Me as a producer, I think I've grown tremendously," Soulja told us recently in L.A. "I've been in the studio with Kanye. I did three tracks for him back-to-back."

Soulja says the sessions were give and take.

"Me working with him, collaborating different beats," he explained. "Him showing me a lot of stuff I didn't know. Me showing him a lot of stuff he didn't know. He had an ear for my sound. Of course I had an ear for all the stuff he did. Genius! You know what I mean?

"The process with Kanye — he'll come in and it depends on what it is," Soulja continued. "If I'm making the beat from scratch, I'll just work. If he's got a sample ... It was three different samples that we was working on. On one of them, he was like, 'I want this to go here, I want you to do this.' I like when an artist pushes me how he was pushing me. He doesn't go easy on me. I make it and be like, 'Here.' Nah, I had to go over it several times. It can be frustrating too. At the same time, sitting there trying to make a beat for the person that's right in front of you, it can be a lot of pressure, but it's all fun. At the end of the day, we're making hit music."

0 Mike Posner Interview W/ Hip Hop Game

Hip Hop Game Caught up Mike Posner to discuss his mixtape, "One Foot Out The Door", creating the theme song for Duke's Basketball Team, Signing with J Records and how he balances school and music.

Hip Hop Game: How do you like balancing going to class and doing that work along with making music and keeping a buzz in the game going?

Mike Posner: It’s definitely a challenge being a recording artist on a major label while being a senior at Duke but I think I’m doing a pretty good job. Since the year started I’ve done more than maintain my momentum. I increased it. I don’t think you wanted to interview me when I started this school year and I think I’ve increased my momentum since then. And I’m still doing pretty good in school. I haven’t had my midterms yet but I’ve done 20 bajillion shows. But we’ll see when grades come back. I have a 3.6 right now and I plan on maintaining that or raising it.

Hip Hop Game: Do any of the professors cut you some slack on assignments because of your music situation?

Mike Posner: Not really slack but they are very understanding since they know I'm not like partying or just being lazy. Some are very helpful and this goes back to last year. Last year I had a meeting with Jay-Z when I had a paper due and I think I got a few extra days on that paper. That was a cool teacher. But overall, Duke as a whole has been super-supportive of me. Professors, overall, are understanding and kids, if I have to miss, they’re giving me the notes or bringing me up to speed with what I missed in the class.

Hip Hop Game: Do you get any groupies at Duke because you’re signed to J Records or do the girls just not get down like that there?

Mike Posner: Uh…(laughs) I think girls are attracted to people that are doing well in anyplace. I do as well as any college kid.

0 Drake Talks "Thank Me Later" W/ Rap-Up Magazine

Rap-Up magazine recently caught up with Drake to discuss his debut album: "Thank Me Later":

Via Rap-Up Mag:

Rap Up: How far along are you in the recording process?

Drake: I’m still in an early stage. This is my first album and it takes a lot for me to commit to a song and be like, “I like this enough that I’m gonna put it on the album.” Every artist will have their album list, like these are the songs I’m considering. It takes a lot for me to put a song onto that list. It’s gotta be a real great song. It’s gotta be something that I feel is timeless and is better than anything that I’ve ever done. Towards the end, you listen to it as a full body of work and start to appreciate certain songs that you may not have seen the vision for initially. I’m gettin’ there though. I’mma get it done. Next few months, it’ll be done.

Rap Up: Who have you worked with so far?

Drake: I haven’t really worked with that many people. I sat down with Pharrell for a couple days, but it was very, very early in the recording process, so I wasn’t sonically sure what I wanted. I’m about to sit with Timbaland. Kanye and me have a lot of work to do together, and then other than them, just [Noah "40" Shebib] and Boi-1da who did the majority of the mixtape [So Far Gone] with me.

Rap Up: There are reports that “Shut It Down,” featuring The-Dream and produced by 40, is the first single from the album. Is that true?

Drake: No, it’s not the first single. It deserves to be a single at some point, but it’s not the first single.

Rap Up: Have you selected a first single?

Drake: No, not yet. I have trouble doing that. I’d say I have about six songs done and to pick from just six is hard for me ’cause I don’t know what else is going to come. With So Far Gone, before “Best I Ever Had” became the single, the entire project was done and it just happened to be the most commercially viable, catchiest song. I like picking my singles like that. Now obviously my management hates that because that doesn’t give them much time to work it. But I’m a big believer that everything should happen organically and if it doesn’t then something’s not right, and I don’t really want to change my formula. Before I start working a single, I need to get about 10, 15, 20 songs done so I can pick from a batch of music as opposed to just committing to something right now.

Rap Up: Does the album have a release date?

Drake: Not right now, but I’m hoping for February.

What would a collaboration between three of hip-hop’s biggest breakout stars sound like? Wale tells Rap-Up TV how he desperately tried to get the perfect track for him, Drake, and Kid Cudi from Jay-Z after Jay eventually passed on it for The Blueprint 3.

“I told Cudi, if you tell Kanye to let me get that joint, we could make the biggest record ever—me, you, and Drake,” the D.C. rapper says of the Kanye West production, tentatively titled “Let the Money Fall.” “That would’ve been the record for us three to be on. I was like, this is gonna be bigger than any record ever.”

0 Lil Boosie Sentenced To 4 Years In Jail After Violationg Probation

Via XXL Mag:

Lil Boosie is behind jail sooner than expected after failing to follow a judge’s instructions.

According to Louisiana news network, WAFB, the Baton Rouge rapper showed up in court on Monday (November 9) for violating the terms of his probation, and a judge sent him directly to jail when his electronic ankle monitor revealed numerous infractions.

As XXLMag.com previously reported, Boosie copped a plea deal back in September for a drugs and weapons charge in 2008. In order to avoid trial in the case, he pled guilty and the judge agreed to only sentence him to two years, with him probably only having to serve one year on good behavior.

Now Boosie’s jail time has doubled, with him having to serve at least two years behind bars.

“I made some very foolish choices, but I was doing the best I could to provide for my family before I went away to jail,” he wrote in a statement. “Clearly I exercised terrible judgment and I hope to get the opportunity to prove that I can make great decisions for my family and the community in the future.”

0 Marcus Jordan Blows 3 Million Dollar Endorsement Deal... Just For Kicks

I don't usually post too much sports related stuff on here but I thought this was kinda interesting...

Via Huffington Post:

A fight over the shoes Michael Jordan's son will wear at the University of Central Florida has cost the school any future sponsorship with adidas.

"The University of Central Florida has chosen not to deliver on their contractual commitment to adidas," adidas spokeswoman Andrea Corso wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "As a result we have chosen not to continue our relationship with them moving forward."

Freshman guard Marcus Jordan wore a pair of white Air Jordans during UCF's 84-65 win in an exhibition game against Saint Leo on Wednesday night, the Orlando Sentinel reported on its Web site. Jordan has said he will only wear his father's Nike Air Jordan shoes because they hold special meaning to his family.

UCF is in the final year of a five-year contract with adidas that requires coaches and athletes to use the company's apparel and equipment.

"We are disappointed to learn that adidas has chosen to discontinue its relationship with UCF Athletics," the school said in a statement Wednesday night released by spokesman Joe Hornstein. "Once we receive official notice we will be able to further respond."
Damn can't really say im mad at dude...Adidas thought they were going to get a JORDAN to rock their shoes? lol I'm sure Nike will offer a bigger endorsement deal anyways.....

Quotable:
DJ Booth: What is a personal priority for you moving forward? Is it, studio albums, just Crooked I, is it a sophomore album for Slaughterhouse, is it overseeing your label? What is numero uno on your list?
Crooked I: Numero uno on my list, to be honest with you, is probably the new Slaughterhouse album. That might be really number one on my list. I mean, I’m gonna hit the game hard with my own solo album. All this sh*t I’ve been through, I’m tryin’ to drop a nuclear bomb on the industry, you know what I’m sayin’? I know that’s comin’, and when that comes I’ve gotta be very available – my time has to be strictly for that project. It’s been a long time coming, that’s coming. I think I might wanna go work on Slaughterhouse II first, but I’m not sure. Don’t quote me, because I don’t know, man. I get off this tour, I get back to California, start driving through the city of Long Beach, and I might say, “You know what? It’s time for me to blow the whole industry up real quick.
