0 Lupe Fiasco Speaks On Records Leaking; Postpones Mixtape Releases

Via MTV:

Thanks a lot, music thieves and Internet hackers — or at least the ones who have been pillaging through Lupe Fiasco's new joints. Because of you guys, the MC said he's not putting out the sequel to his Enemy of the State: A Love Story mixtape anytime soon.

"I was plotting on doing the follow-up to that," Lupe said. "Simply because [Enemy of the State] was short. And I felt like it was space to do another one. I was gonna do another one called Friend to the People, but I started to get wind that people had songs they shouldn't have had. I was like, 'This is just gonna open the floodgates if I come out with another record. I know these dudes are threatening to leak records and do crazy stuff.' Sometimes I feel there may be too much Lupe music out there — whether it be old stuff or new stuff or freestyles. I don't want to have a ton of music sitting out. I made the decision to fall back from it and really focus on the climb. We were a couple of weeks away from doing that."

0 Eminem, Lil Wayne, Drake and Travis Barker to Perform "Forever" at Grammy's

Via Rolling Stone:

Eminem, Lil Wayne, Drake and Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker will come together for a “special performance” on this Sunday’s Grammy Awards, the official Grammy Twitter revealed this morning. Based on the talent involved, it’s safe to assume the rappers will perform a rocked-up rendition of their hit “Forever,” which was overlooked in for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. However, the fourth rapper featured on that track, Kanye West, was not added as a performer, even though
West is a nominee on three of the five songs that are up for the Best Rap
Collaboration Grammy. Perhaps producers feared another “incident.” As it stands
now, the performance will also likely be Lil Wayne’s last major television
appearance before he heads off to prison in February. ****

I think it's crazy that this time last year, most of you hadn't heard of Drake, "So Far Gone" hadn't dropped and he was literally "watching Hov's show, embarrassed to pull [his] camera out". Now, not only is he performing but he is nominated in a few categories as well. O what a difference a year makes......

0 Bun B & GLC "Happiness Over Riches" (Prod. by The Weathermen)

"I remember getting an e-mail about a Cool Kids and Bun B show happening on 12/15/09. I immediately thought of trying to get Bun in the studio for a Closed Session, and knew that GLC would be the perfect Chicago artist for Bun to work with. GL reached out to Bun and a mere few hours before the show I got a call that Bun was down and would be at the studio at 7. Their show (which also featured GLC) started at 9, so we had an incredibly short amount of time to make this work, and that's if everything started promptly. Now, we're dealing with musicians and nothing ever starts on time for musicians--this session was no exception.... You'll get the full story of how this track went down with the full Closed Session video coming soon... For now just know that with a few strings pulled, a clutch beat from The Weathermen, and a little bit of luck, everything came together and we're able to present "Happiness Over Riches" featuring Bun B and GLC (prod by The Weathermen)."

0 Drake Covers Complex Magazine + Interview

Drake covers Complex Magazine's February/March 2010 issue and spills the beans on his debut album "Thank Me Later", Lil Wayne going to jail, critics, "The Fall" and much more. In the snippet below, Drake speaks on Kid Cudi, Wale, J. Cole and his songwriting process:

Complex: The first time we ever spoke, you said that you were more in tune with R&B artists than the current new guys rapping.

Drake:
When you're coming up, and you're in competition with somebody, it's always hard to have a friendship. I think Cudi and I are realizing that we don't threaten each other. It's ended up being one of the greatest industry friendships I have.

Around the time that Kanye directed "Best I Ever Had," it seemed like there was strife between your camp and Cudi's camp because Kanye was so enamored of you while Cudi's project was being worked on.
Drake: I wasn't aware of that. Even so, I could understand. If Wayne were to be enamored—which is a great word—of another young artist, I would be like, "Damn, I'm here too!" But at the same time, it happens in more than one situation. It happens with 'Ye, and I have a great relationship with Jay, and Jay's got Wale and J. Cole, who's one of my favorite dudes rapping right now. I've happened to have had more success. I made the most money, I have number-one records, those guys don't have that shit. And it's just facts, it's not even my feelings or that I feel I'm more talented. That's what the game is about, making great music that earns profit. When it comes to my relationship with the new dudes, I'm just excited for them. I get to sit back in a cool position and be like, "Yo, I'm excited to see you do it now because I know what it's like, it's gonna be so much fun for you…"

You feel like you're at the finish line?

Drake: I'm at the starting line. Those guys are at home, putting on their tracksuits, getting ready to make their attack. When J. Cole gets it super-right, I think he's gonna have a place as a Nas-type character who really stands for hip-hop, but still makes ill records that everybody fucks with.

Take me through your songwriting process
.

Drake:
With R&B, I know my sound. I know I make records to fuck to.
[Laughs.]
Drake: The way Jay and Wayne write rap, I write R&B. I don't write lyrics down on paper. The other day, I was in the studio with Alicia Keys, and I wrote two songs just speaking to her. I wish I could write that way for rap. With my rap songs, there's so much of me I have to give that I don't know if I could ever just flow. The thing is, I'm a great rapper. There's two elements to rap: having the thoughts, and then being a great rapper. I can really rap the shit that I write. My tone, my inflection. When I listen to myself on records, I don't feel like I don't belong there. When I listen to "Forever," with three of my heroes, I fit right in.

0 Kanye West Banned From Haiti Benefit Telethon

Via Hip Hop Wired:

It looks like the actions of Kanye West in the past and his constant issue with
checking his ego at the door hasn't paid off for the rapper even now.

In an attempt to bring as many supporters as possible to aid in the relief of
Haiti, there have been countless telethons being conducted to raise awareness
and donations for the country after the devastation that it's suffered.

Actor George Clooney is doing his part with his own telethon, but
reports are saying that he won't allow West to participate in the fundraiser
which will be broadcasted tomorrow.

Sources have added that they are going out of their way to ensure that West doesn't make an unwanted appearance, courtesy gawker.com.

“After what he said on the Katrina telethon and the way he behaved at the MTV Video Music Awards, everyone agrees it's just best that he does not participate,” said a producer.

Where some blame it on his passion, others look at it as a little kid trying to just get
everyone's attention while embarrassing others in the process.

“Kanye has to make everything about himself. He will do anything
to steal the spotlight, and, well, this night it's just not about him.”

0 Director Of "On To The Next One" Speaks on Video's Controversial Imagery + Jay-Z Addresses Illuminati Claims

The Jay-Z/Illuminati theories aren't anything new. In fact, it seems ever since HOV got his money right and started throwing the diamond up, conspiracy theorists have speculated about his possible involvement in a secret society. On new years day 2010, however, rumors of Jay-Z's Illuminati involement soared to new heights after the release of his video for "On To The Next One" Ft Swizz Beatz. Within hours of the videos release, conspiracy theorists began running wild citing the videos abstract imagery as "the smoking gun", proving Jay-Z's ties to Freemasons, Illuminati, Secret Societies etc. Sam Brown, the videos director recently spoke with Vibe to clear the air:

There’s been a lot of talk about Jay’s video containing Freemason imagery such as the horned animal head, an eagle and skull. What are your thoughts about such talk and why do you think music fans are so quick to believe a conspiracy narrative?

I’m aware of the stir the video has caused and what people are saying. I think when you’re dealing in abstract imagery people are going to want to draw lines between things and make sense of it. However, I’ve always felt that the viewing public was, in general, extremely visually literate. They don’t always want or need things to be spelt out for them. One of the great things about music videos are they can be enjoyed purely visually—it doesn’t need to mean anything or make any sense. Conspiracy theory is another thing entirely, and seems to me to be about projecting pre-existing beliefs and desperately looking for things that confirm them. There is imagery in this video that is drawn from all over the place. None of it is owned by any one culture or belief system. You can connect anything if you try hard enough, and make it mean anything you want it to.

In addition, Jay-Z himself denied any connections to any secret societies and even discussed his views on religion during a pair of interviews with Ed Lover and Angie Martinez, which can be heard below.
