0 Behind The Scenes Of XXL's "10 For 10 Freshman" Photoshoot (Video)
Now that the cat is out of the bag and XXL magazine has announced this year's Freshmen 10 issue, the publication is all the way turnt up with promotion. There's a concert in NYC next week with a lot of the gang, and last week, the mag dropped a tape featuring all the Freshmen 10 picks. DJ Whoo Kid hosts, and the fellas tagged as being the leaders of the new school all contributed songs.
"I feel like we've been working real hard — not just in 2009, but for the years before it," Nipsey told us at the cover shoot for the issue about him and his homie Jay Rock. "But to see XXL recognize what we're doing, especially being from the [West] Coast. ... I'm not saying I expected us to be here, but at the same time, I feel like we deserve it."

1 XXL Magazine's '10 Freshman (Cover)
Relax and take notes ’cause class is in session. After months of speculation over which rappers made XXL’s 3rd annual Freshmen Class cover, the list of the 10 Freshmen for ’10, was completely revealed last week.
Now is the unveiling of XXL’s April issue’s cover featuring the 10 Freshmen for ’10. Hip-hop fans got a sneak peak of the mag’s special cover yesterday on MTV2’s Sucker Free, when it was first seen publically and today (March 1) it hits the web.
The new breed of hustlers includes: Roc Nation’s first signee J. Cole, gangsta rap up-and-comer Nipsey Hu$$le, newly-minted Asylum lyricist Pill, 1017 Brick Squad member OJ Da Juiceman, indie-sensation Wiz Khalifa, G.O.O.D. music’s own Big Sean, underground favorite Fashawn, Gary, Indiana rep Freddie Gibbs, West Coast phenom Jay Rock and the latest addition to the Atlantic roster, Donnis.

0 XXL Magazine Reveals First Four Freshman Of 2010

Last month, 10 up-and-coming MCs started getting fresh like it was their first day of school. They had to be camera-ready to shoot the annual "Freshman 10" issue of XXL magazine. The special edition of the publication has become a hip-hop tradition, as they give the nod to 10 mic masters they feel will be the next big stars.
In 2008, names like Saigon, Lil Boosie and Plies made the cut, while last year, B.o.B, Charles Hamilton, Wale and Asher Roth graced the cover. Other members of the '09 class were Kid Cudi, Ace Hood, Curren$y, Blu, Mickey Factz and Cory Gunz.
XXL Editor in Chief Vanessa Satten said the editorial staff started deciding the 2010 class two months ago. Besides their own research, they also took recommendations from the magazine's editors at large and freelance writers.
"It's always interesting to assemble the guys, because you don't know what kind of vibe you're gonna get," Satten said about the photo shoot. "The first [class in 2008], they were kinda brooding. They were kind of boring on the actual shoot. The second one, they were exciting. This year, we didn't know what to expect from them, because the first two [classes] were so opposite of each other. You never know what you can expect when you get those 10 rappers together. It could be pretty much anything.
"You're not dealing with divas like you normally do with a bigger cover," she added. "But at the same time, you're dealing with people who've got these insecurities, who are not used to the situation and not as recognizable. You gotta get them to be a bit more animated and be a little bit more interesting so the photos could be spectacular. It's a little different when you put a bigger star on the cover."
