Drake Interview With The BoomBox

The BoomBox talks to Drake about touring with Lil Wayne, How he started singing, his 2 Million dollar deal with Universal Records, How his relationships with women have change since his new found fame,The Young Money Compilation album and his solo debut, "Thank Me Later", which he says will probably drop around valentines day 2010. Here a snippet of the interview:
The BoomBox: There was a lot of talk about the unprecedented recording deal you signed with Young Money/Universal Republic. Beyond the $2 million advance, as a new artist you retain your publishing rights and masters to your songs and only cede 25 percent of your music sales revenues to the label. What kind of say did you have in the negotiation of that deal?
Drake: I didn't really care about the advance money. That's what's cool to the public because they think, 'Oh, s---, he has $2 million dollars.' But your advance could be a million dollars and you may never make money after that because you got f---ed so badly on the back end. But my biggest thing is having creative control. I don't want anyone telling me, "Oh, you can't put this single out or you can't shoot the video until this day. That's why I signed with my managers Hip Hop Since 1978. I didn't really care what they give me up front. My biggest thing was owning my music. I just wanted all my masters and I wanted Canada, as a country, as my own territory. Instead of signing to a label what I'm trying to do is sign to a phone company.

J. Cole Interview W/ Honey Magazine

Honey Magazine recently caught up with Rocnation signee, J. Cole to discuss his early struggles finding a rap name, How close he and Jay-Z are, His latest mixtape: "The Warmup", How his new found fame has affected his relationships with women and comparisions betweeb him and Drake. Here's a snippet of the interview:
It’s funny that you compare it to sports, because a lot of rappers
put their “practices” on the web. But you started off taking a bit more of the
traditional route. If you could, would you have gone back and tried pushing
harder on the blogs?
Nah, I think the way I did it was perfect. I’m not going to say that’s the
way I had planned, but that’s the way I believed in. I saw it as you’re supposed
to put your best foot forth at all times. So I stuck to my guns. I put out one
mixtape before I got my deal. My second mixtape came after. You see what I’m
saying? I got my deal based strictly off the music.
How do you
think that benefits you?
I’m like a mystery. If I was one of these rappers heavy on the blogs,
but without a deal and had gotten signed with Jay-Z, it wouldn’t have caused the
same effect. People would’ve just been like “Oh, that’s what’s up. He’s been
grinding for a minute. Rather than, “Who’s that?”
True. Speaking of Hov, Wale was recently interviewed in VIBE saying
he gets to talk to Jay more than anyone else. As Roc Nation’s first artist,
what’s your relationship like with him?
I don’t even speak to him close to that much. I’m all about…you earn
shit. Even though I signed that deal, you ain’t going to catch me in every
picture throwing up…
A Roc sign?
Yeah and just eating off that brand. That time is going to come. They put
in years worth of work to build that up and it would be phony for me to just
come in because I got signed and now the next day I’m so Roc’d out. Nah. You
have to earn the right to be Jay’s friend. He has to be impressed with you as a
person. He’s not obligated to hang out with you now that you’re signed to his
label. I mean a year from now who knows what shit will be like. So I speak to
Jay when it’s necessary and when it’s appropriate.

Drake Speaks On Not Landing Jay-Z's 1st Single

In early June rumors began to surface through out the web that the Toronto bred MC Drake, would be featured on The Blueprint 3's first single on a song called "Off That". However, much to the surprise of Drake enthusiasts around the globe, Jay-Z actually chose "Run this Town" featuring pop star, Rihanna and rapper, Kanye West as his albums lead single.
The Boombox recently spoke with Drake, who shared his thoughts on the matter:
"I don't know who came up with that rumor to be honest, but I always knew what Jay's first single was going to be,"... "Me and Jay did a lot of work together. Maybe at one point he was considering doing it and someone got over-excited and put out a press release that I was going to be on the first single."
Drake, who is still earning kudos from the hip-hop community for his mixtape, "So Far Gone", offered his thoughts on "Run This Town", while remaining optimistic that his song with still make the album. "I think Jay made a great choice," he says. "I think the 'Run This Town' song is phenomenal. I think Kanye kills that s---. I actually heard that song when it was a Rihanna track." ..."We have more than one record to pick from. Jay-Z is one of those guys that's just too good. I would be definitely disappointed if I wasn't on it. I think it's going to be a legendary project. I have my fingers crossed." -

Drake Interview W/ Complex 7/2/09

Drake chops it up with Complex regarding his video for "Best I Ever Had", the now infamous Young Money BET Awards show performance, The death of Michael Jackson and World Star Hip Hop's hating tendencies.
Quotable:
"I think World Star Hip-Hop thinks it bothers me. There was a time in my life when I really lashed out against World Star Hip-Hop... and I think that they took that personally and now all they do is air Degrassi clips of me and potential things that could embarrass me. But with me, man…the great thing about me being me in this game is that I’ve been so honest up until this point, I really have nothing to hide, I don’t fear any clip, you know? It’s out there already, everyone knows that’s my story. At the end of the day, it’s part of me, it’s my stepping stone. I’m proud of every moment thus far". - Drake
